iPod Classic Problem

Running Catalina on a MacBook Pro (13 inch, mid 2012) and have an iPod Classic. Finder can "see" the iPod when connected. Clicking on the "disc" shows all the files on the iPod. But, clicking on the iPod Icon in Finder brings up a picture of the iPod and its storage capacity. Bellow is a blank window and a "Loading..." message. It stays on for about 2 minutes and then says Finder can't find the devise. I've rebooted Finder and repeated the steps, same problem. Music can see the iPod but won't allow me to drag new albums/songs to the device.

Help!

Formatted to Mac. Interestingly, my wife found some old Nano units at a garage sale. I've tried connecting them and the same thing happens. System can "see" the devices, read their files but not able to sync or transfer songs. This makes me think the iPod isn't corrupt. Ether there's a system problem with my Mac Book or maybe the cable I'm using isn't working.

I guess I'm not being clear enough...

I connect the iPod to the MacBook Pro and Finder can see the device. There are two icons under the heading "Locations" in the left sidebar. Both have the name of the iPod. One icon is a miniature picture of the device, the other looks like an external hard drive. Clicking on the hard drive icon shows all the directories and files on the iPod in the main window of Finder. I can transfer files back and forth with this but don't seem to be able to play any of the music I transfer to the device in this way.

When I click the miniature iPod Icon the main window in Finder goes black. A picture of the iPod appears at the top with the devices name and the memory capacity. "Loading" and the apple spinner appears in the center of the main Finder window and remains there for about 5 minutes. Eventually, it stops and a new message comes up: "The Selected Device Cannot be found" but still with the spinner spinning.

So, I don't see how I'm going to be able to restore the iPod if I can't get the computer to find the device.

Well, the reformatting worked fine on an old windows machine I have. The trouble is that there is only a fraction of my music on the Windows machine. I've connected the iPod to my Mac thinking I could just reformat back. Nope, same problem. Finder can "see" the iPod as an external disc but no functionality as an iPod. It just has the "Loading.." message for about 5 mins and then says "The Selected Device Cannot be found." So, again, this all makes me think there's a problem with my MacBook, not the iPod or cable.
