How do I disable the screen saver

I have never had a screen saver. The screen goes blank, which is what I want. last night I walked by the study and a screen saver was running rampant across the iMac screen. I went into preferences, but I see lots of options, but no option to disable it. Help!

Screen Saver Options missing from window Hi - According to Help, in my Desktop/Screen Saver preferences window there are supposed to be some Screen Saver Options such as "color, speed, and more." screen saver runs in background and will not shut off OS12.6 iMac How do I close my screen saver that keeps running in the background and will not shut off. Each time I log on to my computer I get an error message that I shut down my computer with a problem and did I want to open the app that I was using prior to shut down. How do I fix it?

You don't mention which version of macOS you are using. However, check System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver, and set "Start after:" to Never from the drop down menu.
