I need to know how to format an external hard drive that I use for backing up my Mac.

My external hard drive is not showing up on my desktop. I have unplugged and plugged back in and I get nothing. I am using a Seagate model SRD00F2 Backup Plus for Mac Desktop Drive.

I am having trouble using my new external hard drive to back up through Time Machine. Do I need to re-format it and if so, how do I do that?
