Preview as default in Finder

Does PREVIEW have to be the program that opens pictures when you click on them in FINDER? And how would I change it so Preview wasn't the default? What would be another app or program comparable to Preview? And why does Preview have that cursor that creates dots and spaces?

Thanks for any info. Much appreciated.

To change what program opens a specific file type, Get Info on the file, pick an App in the Opens With section, then click Change All.

I don't know what program you would use. Depends on what you want to do with the file when you open it.

And why does Preview have that cursor that creates dots and spaces?

Do you mean the selection marquee? That is for selecting part of an image. You can copy it or crop to the selection.
