I was having a problem not being able to make a new folder, it opened with every item on my desktop. I followed directions from one help site and ended up deleting the .plist and The problem is not resolved. How do I get a new .plist and fix my folder problem?

It is not a good idea to modify Apple’s system .plist files. At this point you would be better of re-installing macOS.
Thank you for your help. I have several PC experts in my family, I am the only Mac. This is my first problem ever and it scares me. Do you know if when I reinstall the macOS I will loose everything on my hard drive?
