Alternative to office 365

I somehow missed the upgrade to Catalina, but finally did so last night after a problem occurred. I lost my Office 2011 and am now on a 30 day free trial of Office 365. I baulked at the prospect of paying a subscription. Is there an alternative? I read that my Mac is supposed to have come with Apple's own version, but I'm blowed if I can find it. Maybe I deleted it by accident. I just want something to open my Word and Excel documents really. Can anyone help please. I'm sure I cannot be the only one who feels this way.

You can download the following apps from the Mac App Store - Numbers (Replaces MS Excel), Pages (Replaces MS Word) and Keynote (Replaces MS PowerPoint). Those are all free. They work well with files already created by Office 365 programs. There will be a few compatibility issues which the app will resolve for you. Those apps by Apple may work for you instead of Office 365. Try them out.
