iOS Files.

My MacBook is using over 82GB of storage for iOS Files. When I click "Manage..." it gives me the option to "Permanently erase device backups and software updates to free up storage space." What backups does this entail? Will I lose my pictures?

I keep trying to delete IOS files(back ups) Every time I choose delete, it prompts me to enter my password to confirm the deletion of these very old and space consuming backups. When I choose delete, the files still just sit there and do nothing. I looked up how to delete them and no one seemed to have this issue. How can free up the 22gb this is stupidly taking from my macbook?

You should not be deleting your backups as they contain the following -- What does iCloud back up? - Apple Support.
