Two Choices is One Too Many

So this isn't the most earth shattering problem but it is one that offends my sense of things not quite functioning properly. So here it is - I have Joe Blow (fictitious name of course) in my Contact list and the phone # is preceded by the area code. When I am in Messages and I type in Joe (I only have one Joe in my Contact list) I get 2 Joe Blows show up - one with the area code and one without. How can I tweak things so that I only get Joe Blow (area code) phone # show up when I type Joe into the Messages address bar?

Run a search in Contacts, and see if there are two entries for dearest Joe? It’s quite possible to get duplicate entries in different address books, and all selected sources will show up when queried.

What’s probably happened here is a lack of groups. iPhone doesn’t have a way to add groups, that involves iCloud or macOS. Which means you don’t have any groups. This is what I’d expect at the top of Contacts, with groups present:

Which iOS version are you using here? iOS and iPadOS 13.5 are the most current.

Does a search for the entry—without regard to groups—show duplicate entries?

The iPhone is on 13.4.1

If I type in "Joe Blow" into the search box - only the single entry for Joe Blow comes up.

The last link in your note pertaining to duplicates has to do with removing duplicate contacts on the Mac.

The problem I am outlining only occurs on the iPhone and specifically on my wife's iPhone which is not (I think) connected to the cloud.
