Could someone please explain in detail to a newbie how to transfer photos or data from laptop to my iphone SE (2020). As an ex Android user this process is beyond me so far, and in spite of Apple Support kindly trying to help, I feel I need more detail on the process, instead of just telling me to download itunes.

Thanks for that Peter, and everyone for your help. Still had problems; Ive been told that my old Android softwaew on a Miui Redmi 4X, is not compatible for syncing with iOS. So I managed to find an app which worked very well, in minutes, by wifi. The app is Feem. on Apple Appstore and Google Playstore.
If anyone else suffers a software malocclusion...try that.

ok generally you do not transfer, you synchronize (sync) from pc to iphone and import from iphone to pc

Many thanks, seems to be ok now I have icloud on both devices! Its a different process to Android, Ill have to remember not to think Androidish in future! :-)
You could just sync them through Google Photos.
