I've read the different post but please let me get this straight. My Apple ID is my email address from when the 1st apple iPhone hit the market. That email address hasn't been active for years now and I want to change it to an active email address. If I go into my online account and just change the Apple ID from the old email address to the new one will I jeopardize / lose any purchases of apps or music as I have quite a lot invested here?

The whole point of simply editing the primary email is so you don’t lose anything. All you’re doing is changing the login ID you’ll use, while the accounts linked to that AppleID remain unchanged.
If you do the above, you will not jeopardize/lose any purchases of apps or music or other data.
