Transferring files from old MacBook to new Macbook

After having some on and off start up challenges with my MacBook Pro, it finally stopped starting up. After having several unsuccessful attempts at rebooting my laptop (safe mode, disk utility, etc), I got a new MacBook Pro and tried transferring the files from my old laptop via target disk mode. After connecting, I tried to decrypt my laptop’s hard drive and received this error message after entering the password. Is this an issue related to my laptop’s start up issue or am I perhaps doing something wrong?

Certainly welcome any suggestions! Outside of taking the laptop in, I’m not quite sure how else to possibly access the files from my old MacBook Pro that won’t start now.

Thanks all!

Your old MacBook Pro is not starting up and you are attempting to retrieve data from it to your new MacBook Pro. Does your old MacBook Pro show any signs of life when you push the power button? I ask because is it possible that only the HD has failed? if YES then you can make a bootable USB Flash Drive and attach it to your old MacBook Pro and then boot from it. After that you can examine what is on the HD if possible. Just a thought. If it is completely dead AND you do not have a Time Machine backup then the options are limited.
