microsoft office disappeared

so my my sister updated my mac to catalina and now i cant see/use anything microsoft office especially word and excel since i use them a lot. somehow i managed to downgrade the os to mojave but i still cant use word and excel. (macbook air mid 2013)

While upgrading to Catalina isn't supposed to remove any of your personal data or third party apps, you aren't the first person here to report Office 2011 or 2008 were actually removed from the drive. In a way, it doesn't matter since they won't work in Catalina anyway, but it still shouldn't do that.


If you need Office and don't want to revert to a backup with an older OS, then I would strongly suggest getting Office 365, or the one-time cost Office 2019. The main reason being, if your Excel or other Office docs are even just somewhat complex, it's unlikely OpenOffice will display them correctly. Apple's, very weak substitutes, Pages/Numbers, even less likely.


It's also important to keep in mind who uses your data. Do you share files between clients? If so, then seriously, don't even consider anything but a newer version of Office. Your clients will eventually pull their business away from you if they have to juggle getting files to and from you using apps that are not fully compatible.
