Hi,
I run 10.11.6 on a 2011 macbook. It seems that I can't upgrade to anything past El Capitan. Why??? I'm getting fed up of Apple deliberately making perfectly good machines 'Vintage' by making their OS life so short so you have to buy new machines. Is there a way I can upgrade at all??

Your 2011 MacBook should be able to upgrade to High Sierra.

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac.
Check that third party apps you use have updates available for the new OS.
Check that your printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software available for the new OS.
Connect your mac to your router via cable rather than rely on WiFi if you can
Do not use your mac while it is downloading
and do not use any other devices that share the same internet connection.

Apple has its reasons when making the decision not to support earlier Macs with new OS versions, one of them being that older Macs do not have the power to support new features, be it cpu or graphics power related. However if you really want to install Catalina, a web search can lead you to solutions on how to do so with 3rd party help.
