Even though I can select my external bluetooth speakers on both my sound preferences menu and my bluetooth menu, my computer will only play through it's internal speakers. It does not show my external speakers as an option...

Most problems can be fixed by unpairing and repairing the Bluetooth device, though if it doesn't help resetting NVRAM as well as SMC could solve your problem.
If both of them don't help, resetting Bluetooth module could works.
