Can’t sign in to iTunes on my Apple TV

I can’t sign into iTunes on my Apple TV every time I try it says I need to put in a verification code. I get the code on my phone but when I click OK to the message to move forward and put in the code it brings me back onto the screen for my password instead and it becomes a perpetual loop

Apple TV asks for Apple ID password, enter
An authentication code will be sent to your iPhone or iPad or Mac.
Apple TV asks for the Apple ID password again, enter it followed by the authentication code. For example if your Apple ID password is XYZ123 and the authentication code is 4567 enter XYZ1234567
Do this quickly or it will time out!
