iPad Pro stuck on red line (battery) won't charge

My iPad pro when plugged in does not charge, turn on or do anything except occasionally flash the battery on the screen w a tiny little red line and that is it. It is not the charger, as I've used the charger on other devices. Has anyone else had a problem like this? And if so, how did you solve it??

So I had the same problem on my 12" iPad Pro 2018 edition being stuck on battery with red line after allowing it to go depleted and after the latest software update.

Tried multiple time with original charger and cable and an original apple MacBook Pro USBC charger to no avail, until....

I read somewhere else that some people had success when they used a different brand usb-c cable.

To test this theory I grabbed the other original apple usb-c cable I knew worked because it was charging my MacBook Pro and connected it and the iPad would still not charge.

So I grabbed a generic usb-c cable I had for an android device, connected it to my MacBook Pro port and plugged it in and out a few times from the MacBook Pro and low and behold it booted up and started charging at 1%. I then used the same generic cable and connected it to the apple charger and it kept charging and within 10 minutes reached 7% and kept charging...

At 14% I tried to switch back to either usb-c apple cable I had and it would not charge...

Another bug Apple needs to fix for when the battery goes dead and system refuses to recognize/charge with original apple cable.

This is a software issue folks...

Update.

Met Apple Genius....apple guy told me i probably will pay $400 to replace the whole ipad. i told them about this blog and the apple community one.

he suggested that the ipad might have been doing some update in the background and that might have caused the issue.

anyways I specifically asked him if he can plug their 18w charger which he had on his hand ( i also said get the MBP charger in case if this does not help.

he went inside took about good 7 minutes when he came back ipad Turned on with 1%.

So the good thing is this is just charger issue (or not) because i wanted until it was charged 60% came home and tried my older charger which did not help prior to meeting apple tech.

This time even my older charger is working fine. go figure. anyways i am online now everything is working fine.

that's my update.

Same here (Ipad Pro 11" 64). I haven't been using it for a week or so, the battery eventually depleted and now this is what's happening. I am unable to switch it on, I have tried all recovery/restore etc. tips, to no avail.

I've read somewhere that it may be a software update-caused malfunction. My iPad is two months past warranty. I can't wrap my head around the fact that I'm probably about to pay for a repair... caused by the manufacturer.

Do tell when/if you get it back from the experts.

Well, that was unexpected: I got it diagnosed at a premium reseller store (no Apple stores where I live) and they replaced the device free of charge. Took'em 4 days.

I initially thought my warranty has expired, but It's Europe so I was still allowed to make a claim under the consumer protection period (2 years). Got really lucky this time.

Jul 17, 2020 11:37 AM in response to TIXILX

Looks exactly like my case. The consumer protection thing means that although Apple gives you one year manufacturer’s warranty, they are required by law to observe a two-year period in the EU during which a consumer has the right to make a claim against the seller if the goods fail to meet their initial characteristics, i.e. you’re not getting what you had paid for.

In practice this means that within the one-year warranty period Apple will do what *they* promise in warranty terms and conditions; past that period you’d have to fill out two extra forms to basically force them to fix/repair (this is what I did, advised by the premium reseller). If I’m not mistaken, since it’s consumer protection, you wouldn’t be able to do the same with company-owned devices. Hope that helps, i.e. it makes sense for your neighbor to get the iPad to the nearest Apple store :)))

I am having the same problem. I have 11inch 2018 Ipad Pro. i was playing game and it died because i was so distracted.

then when i tried to charge the RED flashing battery icon shows. it has been like this for at least 10 days. I have apple genius appointment tomorrow.

My conclusion here after reading Reddit and bunch of other forms this was some kind of a bug. this has been very disappointing time because i have used by i pad daily. I really hope they fix this tomorrow, i will post the result here.

Thank you

Thanks for posting ... I’ve just returned from UPS Depot - Returning my friend’s 16 month old lightly used Ipad Pro to Apple Service Centre for repair. This issue occurred immediately following download of last IOS update ..... Hope you get sorted 🙏

Please let “us” know how you get on @ your appointment ...

Hi Aabshir .... Thanks for taking time to post update .... Great to hear that you got the issue sorted .... Some years ago I had a similar issue with my IPhone 4 ... if the battery became fully exhausted it would simply refuse to charge regardless of charger used .. however once attached to a charged 2A battery pack It would start charging again .... once charged to 10% or above any charger would charge it fully !

Update on my 3rd Gen IPad Pro 12.9 ....

Returned to Apple for repair last week (Same issue as you experienced ....)

This is the reply I received this morning ....
