Latest Mojave update for 10.14.6 kills currency converter

Has anyone else had this problem... the currency converter in the Dashboard doesn't work anymore! Any other problems I should know about?

Workaround! You can delete the converter supplied by Yahoo to the Dashboard, download a Converter for Mac widget from Google, install it (automatically goes to Widgets), and now you're all set.

Reread my post. Applying Security Update 2020-003 FIXED the problem. I do not need to do anything else.

I have this same issue in Calculator app version v 10.13 (123) on Mac OS X 10.13.6 with latest security update 2020-002.

No updates to currency conversion since mid May 2020.

The procedure of moving ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.calculator folder to Desktop etc did not help.

console logs show that it tries to get to Apple URL http://wu-calculator.apple.com/dgw?imei=APPLE&apptype=finance which redirects to Yahoo URL http://api.apple.go.yahoo.com/dgw

however host api.apple.go.yahoo.com does not exist. It is not in DNS.

I think Apple needs to work with Yahoo and redirect to a valid URL.

I have submitted feedback to Apple regarding this.

Edit: just noticed there is a security update 2020-003 for 10.13.6 that I did not notice before. Will test it.

As you can see, the Currency component of the Mojave 10.14.6 (18G5033) Calculator application is updating properly here.

Quit the Calculator application. Consider moving the ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.calculator folder to your Desktop. Then press the shift-key and launch the Calculator app again. See if it gives you updated currency per the above image.

The currency converter in the Dash board is sufficiently old, and likely unsupported by Apple (even in Mojave), that the links to Yahoo! currency, may have changed, or changed in that they require a different developer key to access the currency data.

I had a Ruby script here that essentially used the same technique to do currency conversions at Yahoo! until abruptly the link changed, and a registered developer key was required to access the currency server.

As I said previously, Yahoo! used to be fairly liberal with not securing the URL link to their currency conversion server backend in Dashboard. They stopped that practice, and now require an access key, that must now be used in their changed server URL request. There may now also be a charge for excessive conversion requests to their server too.

Unlike Ian, my Mojave (and Catalina) calculator applications still provide current currency information that they receive from (drum roll) Yahoo!.

Yes, same here, but I'm using the standard Apple Calculator app on my iMac. It hasn´t/won't update the currency conversion rates since the latest Mojave update, and is stuck at Nov 16th 2012! I already posted about this a few days ago, and nothing suggested was successful. I even re-installed Mojave from Recovery Mode...still doesn't work. Neither does starting up in Safe Mode or creating a new user account. This seems to be another of those annoying little bugs. However, if I pull up Spotlight current conversions are still working! Regards, Ian.

As mentioned in my last post, I was having problems with currency conversion on Calculator app version v 10.13 (123) on mac os x 10.13.6 with security update 2020-002 not updating. Have just updated to mac os x 10.13.6 with security update 2020-003 (Calculator Version 10.13.6 (192.3)) and the first time opening Calculator app and when selecting menu option Convert, Currency the app crashes. I submitted crash feedback.

After this first crash, when opening the Calculator app and when selecting menu option Convert, Currency, there is no pop up window to select countries. To try and work around this, I select Convert, Area and a pop up shows up. From there I change the Area pull down menu to Currency and then there are no countries listed to be able to do a conversion. See attached image.

So currency conversion is completely broken now rather than just being out of date as in the last version.

I have submitted feedback to Apple regarding this.

Note that the changelog for security update 2020-003 https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT211170 did not mention anything about Calculator app being updated but it does have a different version. Perhaps the Calculator development team needs more oversight.

Apply the 18G5033 security update. Doubt it will make any difference in this puzzling issue.

Click the More Info… after the Other updates are available. There will be two entries, 1) Security Update 2020-003 (10.14.6), and 2) Safari 13.1.1. Catalina will not install.

It could be that Yahoo! has changed the server, or the access model for currency conversions, from the German macOS Calculator application, and Apple has not fact checked this issue. Send them feedback if you have not already.
