iOS backup password

An unexpected error occurred while backing up and updating my wife's iPhone X. It appeared the backup finished and the error occurred while updating, so I went ahead and updated and reset to get the phone back from being bricked.

When I went to upload the backup, it asked for a password which of course my wife doesnt know.

Also -

  • doesnt have additional backups ups icloud
  • the password is not in keychain
  • the phone hasn't been backed up in many years (2016)

From everything I've read I can't find a way to get or reset this back up password. Its pretty important since we had a son about a year ago, so yes the data is very important.

Any ideas on how to get this password or decrypt the backup?

The backup password was set with a previous backup. It never changes, and is never prompted for again unless you check “change password”. The good news is you get unlimited guesses, so think about what would have been entered for that last backup (2016?) when you were prompted twice for a backup password. To speed up guessing select Change Password.

But, if you had important content on the phone, why wasn’t it backed up regularly? Why wasn’t automatic daily icloud backups turned on? If it’s photos involved, are you sure you didn’t do any of these things:

  • iCloud photo sync
  • iCloud backup
  • iTunes backup
  • Transfer your photos to your computer via USB cable
  • Apple Photo Stream
  • Sync to Google Photos
  • Sync to some other photo archiving service such as Shutterfly
  • Sync to Dropbox
  • Sync to box.com
  • back up to Livedrive
  • Backup to any other backup or archiving service

Have you signed in to iCloud with her Apple ID and password?

By data, it seems you may primarily be interested in photos. Are they visible on iCloud.com?

You may have been syncing your photos with iCloud, which means they weren't in any backups.

Also a backup from 2016 could not possibly contain any data from the last year. Even if you could access a2016 backup, it would have erased all data from the phone between that backup now.

The only option is to keep guessing. There is nowhere to recover the password from. You backed up the phone today, but had not backed it up since 2016, and did nothing after the birth to save important information? Unfortunately, you have learned a very bitter lesson and that is the need for regular backups. The iPhone provides a very simple backup method that only requires you to set it up once, then when you go to bed at night and plug the iPhone in to charge and connected to wi-fi, it will backup on its own.
