Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?
Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply. Pastebin.

As a test, I would uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files. Most long time posters recommend not using antivirus software or cleaning software such as CleanMyMac.
You are welcome. There are still a lot of Avast files installed. See if you can find the file(s) using one of these programs. If you go Finder/View/Show Path Bar, it will show you where it is located.

Hi Eric,
I did run an anti-virus program called Malwarebytes. I was told to do that by a Senior Apple Support person. I ran it under his screen sharing and it said there was no virus. I think the program is still installed but not running.
I do have a VPN from Advast, but that is not running. VPN is set to off.
We did set up an admin test account and could log onto gmail from that.
We did boot in safe mode and still could not connect with gmail from my account.
I ran etrecheck an this is the output:
Hi Eric,
I deleted all the avast files and most of the others also. Anything I recognized as old or not used anymore.
I did this over and over and tried to connect each time I deleted something.
I still can't connect to gmail.
The etrecheck most current is below.
Also, a screenshot of the error I keep getting.
Sincerely,
Joseph.
Yes.
Hi Eric, Thank you.
I uninstalled Avast and rebooted. It still did not connect with gmail. I ran another etrecheck and it is below.
