I am making a slideshow in iMovie and want to add songs which I recently added to iTunes. It says they are protected and unavailable in imovie. Please help.

If Apple Music were in any way involved in the chain of purchase then the song would still carry DRM protection and would not be available even though afterwards downloaded to iTunes. Also, even if you purchased the song directly from iTunes it still could possibly carry DRM protection, although not usually so if purchased after year 2009. To find out if your song is protected, open your iTunes library and control-click on the song. From the drop down menu go to Song Info/File/Kind. If the song is protected it will say "Protected". Otherwise it is not protected.

Songs in the cloud would not be read by iMovie either. They would need to be downloaded to your physical iTunes library. However, that probably doesn't apply in your case because the songs are being read but shown as protected and therefore not being displayed.

Try dragging the song from your iTunes library to your desktop and from there dragging it into iMovie. If it is protected it either won't drag in or it will not play (no wave forms).
