My MAC won't let me upgrade new software, it says no new software updates. How do I fix this?

Every time I try to upgrade the software, it says no new updates available. I’m unable to download any new apps. I’ve tried going to the apple site & downloading it that way, but it just doesn’t give me the option to download the latest software. I currently have Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F1911)Late 2013. Do I just need a new computer?


I was on another thread that detailed a similar issue and I tried to follow their recommendation to download macOS Catalina, but it gets stuck after I download it and it won't install.


Maybe I got a virus. I can't download new versions of web browsers either. I thought it was all linked to the software update, but I'm at a loss. I've had this computer for 7 years and I like it b/c of it's simplicity, but I'm stumped.


Please help 😩 I’m so frustrated and defeated, lol. Thanks in advance.

Download Catalina directly:

It will be sitting in your Applications folder "Install macOS Catalina.app"



If you still have an issue boot to SafeBoot mode to download and/or when launching the installer.

Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login



You may well have to stair step your way up, at least to 10.11 before you can go further— since you are so far behind:

Your Mac can run up to the latest version of MacOS, 10.15 Catalina. Some users starting from older versions have trouble jumping forward so many versions, as the Mac App Store has changed a bit. They are forced to Install 10.11 El Capitan as a waypoint, then move on to later versions (if desired) from there.


The fundamental disconnect is that software Update applies updates to the same major version -- once you have applied all the updates to 10.9, and gotten to 10.9.5, no more updates are available.


UPGRADES are handled as if they were new purchases, on sale for $0.
