documents showing as OUT OF SPACE

My MacBook Air has internal storage available of 44GB of 121gb and iCloud storage 3gb is available of 5 gb, still my documents are showing to be running out of space, why? Also, I want to know why documents are getting saved in iCloud storage when good amount of internal storage is there?

Note that iCloud (iCloud Drive) is a synch service and not an extension or addition of storage space to your MacBook or an iPhone for example. Its purpose is to keep your documents available and synced to all your eligible devices. For example, you have 5GB of iCloud space available however the total amount of documents, photos etc on your Mac (and other devices using the same Apple ID) may exceed that space. Which error messages are you getting exactly? Please provide more details so that we can try and explain further.
