Updates for this Mac are managed externally

Hi,

After updating to new version of MacOS on my personal MacBook pro, I've notices this:

Updates for this Mac are managed externally

and when I click on Details....:

Can anyone explain it?

Should I keep it "EXTERNALLY"?

(to be honest, "managed externally" means either by Apple or by someone who wants to Interfere! and sounds scary!)

Thanks

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 10.15

Externally managed computers typically were managed by school systems, or corporate entities. if you got a hand me down computer from such an environment, it is far better for you to erase the operating system entirely with internet restore.

If you bought this computer new directly from Apple, then that is simply a red herring. The software updates come from an external source from Apple's servers. You can always run an update from https://support.apple.com/downloads

and I recommend doing it from there, as new updates have been known occasionally to get a later patch through he support website.

Backup your data before installing anything new.

Hard to tell. It may just be the VPN software. The thing about VPN, is that it limits by proxies where you travel. Try restarting, removing all your proxies and your VPN to see if the problem still exists. And Kaspersky is really not worth it.

Run Etrecheck as described below so we can see what else is on your machine:

Thanks for your answer,

I bought this Mac new from a well-known retail store (obviously in an unopened new package),

I have to mention that it was the first time that I noticed the "....manage externally" message, BUT in "Software Update" I often (not always) see this message:

An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made.

by the way, internet connection with activated VPN was available and working, during all of above described situations.

Do you still recomment to erase the OS entirely?

if I erase the MacOS; is it safe to restore my data from previousely backups through Time Mashine? or these backups may affect the new OS and become just like before.

As for Time Machine backups, Documents are restorable on newer or the same operating systems they were created on.

Applications may restore, and drivers may restore, if they are compatible. Some may mess up, in event they older.

I.e, trying to install a 32 bit driver or plugin on Catalina will not work very well. Or a PowerPC application or plugin on an Intel Mac may also cause problems.

About the VPN:

I use NordVPN on my personal MacBook at home intentionally and there is no such corporate/school network.

About Time Machine backups:

I started using Time Machine since I bought this new MacBook few months ago and use it only for this MacBook.

I also use Kaspersky Security Cloud (also bought personally)

Do you think the "Update for this Mac are managed externally" message, might come from somewhere suspecious that I need to erase the MacOS entirely?
