I tried to open FCP X but get the message "You can’t open the application “Final Cut Pro.app” because it is being updated"

My iMac is old - 2011 so I know that I cannot use the latest version of FCP X but when connecting my iphone to download photos an automatic upgrade did something and then this message

"You can’t open the application “Final Cut Pro.app” because it is being updated"

One site suggested I could go into the App store and download an version compatible with High Sierra 10.13.6 but got nowhere

I can't afford a new iMac!!!

Not only Lockdown but now locked- out

You can download the latest version that works in High Sierra.

Move the application to the trash (don’t empty it just yet).

Open the App Store, click on Purchased, then click to download Final Cut Pro. You will be warned that the current version does not work in your OS and asked if you want to get the most recent version that is compatible.

Select the application and in column view you'll see the application icon and the version number. You can also select the application and press Cmd-I. The info box will show the version number.
