New Ipad for Child

Good Evening.

I have just purchased a new Ipad 7 for my daughter.

She currently has a Samsung Galaxy tablet on the Android platform but decided to go over to Apple so she has compatible hardware to that she uses in school.

On her Android tablet I can pretty much control what she does via Android mobile phone using Google Family Link. Ideally I would like similar control of her new Ipad.

Although I have an Apple ID of my own, this is only for my ancient Ipod. I will still be using an Android Phone at least for the foreseeable future.

When my daughter gets her new Ipad should she set it up with her own Apple ID or should I use mine?

Can I control her use via a compatible Android App?

Any advice on this would be gratefully received. I am relatively new to Apple but would like to ensure my daughter has safe use of her new Ipad.

Many thanks

No, you'll need a Mac computer or an iOS device to set up and manage Family Sharing.

You can however setup Parental Controls and restrictions directly on the iPad without the need of Family Sharing.

These settings will remain in place until you manually change them directly on the iPad. And if you set up a password for them, they cannot be accessed or changed without knowing the password.

If you setup Apple Family Sharing, with you as the Family Organiser, you can link your daughter’s AppleID to the family group.

Family Sharing obviously assumes that that the Organiser has a device of their own from which to manage and receive notifications. You can selectively share content - and control purchasing. Be aware that Family sharing controls are also age-dependent, giving you greater control over accounts of “minors”.

Sorry, but no - and no.

Per the linked support pages, Family Sharing is set-up from an Apple device that supports Family Sharing - such as recent Apple Mac, iPad and iPhone. Whilst it is possible to access your AppleID account from a browser, you’re not able to set-up and manage Family Sharing using a browser alone.

Likewise, associated Notifications are delivered directly to devices that support Family Sharing.

This would seem like a perfect excuse and timing to acquire a nice device for yourself 🙂

An iPad (or Mac) is not a replacement for a mobile phone. As such, an iPad will still complement your existing “Android” until it is due for replacement - at which time you might consider “upgrading” to an iPhone. Once you have an iPhone, an whole new level of integration and services becomes possible.

I get your point. However, the iPad is for my daughter.

I only really came across to Apple for her because the recent enforced home schooling has highlighted the lack of compatibility between some of the Apps the school use on iPads and her Samsung Google Tablet.

I can't afford to replace any of my other devices (all android) now, which unfortunately will mean I lose the control I had between my Android phone and her Android tablet.

I am looking at compatible cross platform Apps.

I am disappointed that Apple cannot allow some functionality with a Parent Apple ID via a browser and an associated email.
