Hello, benjigordon.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand you're missing album artwork since reinstalling your OS. I'd like to help. Are you able to add the artwork manually using the steps here? Add artwork to content in Music on Mac I would also try seeing if you can get the album artwork from the iTunes Store.

"Add artwork to music and video

  1. In the Music app  on your Mac, click Songs in the sidebar on the left.
  2. Select one or more songs in your music library, choose Song > Info, click Artwork, then do one of the following:
    • Click Add Artwork, select an image file, then click Open.
    • Drag the image file to the artwork area.

To retrieve album artwork from the iTunes Store for your entire library, choose File > Library > Get Album Artwork".

The artwork is no longer saved within the Music folder, it now lives here:

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.APMArtworkAgent/Data/Documents

So when you reinstalled the macOS the saved artwork was likely wiped. As far as I know there is no refresh option to reload the artwork, and unlike iTunes, the Music app doesn't automatically display existing and embedded artwork. Re-embedding all existing artwork will work and a batch process might be available on Doug's iTunes script website https://dougscripts.com/itunes/index.php. Doing it manually is a tedious and lengthy process. If you still have a recent iTunes library file you can also select it and start over the initial migration process which will also transfer all artwork to the new location and add it to the Music app, but you still need to add all the music you accumulated since the original transfer. And this can also take several hours depending on the size of your library. I run both Mojave and Catalina systems and thus keep a current iTunes library file in case I need to reinstall Catalina.

Did you try selecting your old iTunes library file and saving it as a new Music library file which will reimport all artwork into Music? is your old iTunes folder still containing the iTunes artwork folder? I had the same issue after reinstalling Catalina and the embedded artwork not being processed by Music app because the hidden artwork folder in Catalina was wiped. The only solution that worked was starting over the transition from iTunes to Music app.

Apologies. I didn’t mean to ignore your suggestion.

I can’t do this because I formatted the internal hard drive and re-installed macOS over the top because of some major software issues I was getting.

So my previous music library files were wiped. Obviously I kept a backup so I could copy it straight back over but the artwork file mentioned previously is gone for good.

It seems the only way around this is to manually re-build it one by one using google images.

Could be so much easier.
