Apple watch and cyclling app

My new apple watch (gps only not phone) does great with walks on distance. But when I first clicked the bicycle workout it flashed something about gps on the screen (too quick for me to read) and went on. It notes the time I am on the bike, but no distance or calories even they are set in the workout app. Something I missed in setup, and how do I correct?
