I am trying to erase my wife’s old MacBook Pro after I bought her a new one, I followed directions I found and now I get a flashing folder with a question mark. What do I do now?

What directions were those? It sounds like you erased the disk well enough.

How do I get the flashing folder to stop so I can get to the internet recovery
You will have to restart by holding down the power key. Then hold down Command (⌘)-R to start in recovery mode.
