Backing up photos without using iCloud

Is there a way for me to easily backup all the photos that I have on my iPad? I don’t want to use iCloud backup as I don’t want to use up all the space on my iCloud and don’t really need to keep the photos on the iPad because they were ones that were taken with an iPhone a while back. I don’t have the iPhone anymore, but my iPad has all the photos and I don’t want to keep them on the iPad using up all it’s storage. It’s an iPad Pro 2020 11” model and 128GB storage. I have tried to use a USB jump drive and it did not work like it should. I was able to copy a few photos over by selecting a few at a time, however, when I try to take all of the pictures and put them on the jump drive, it doesn’t move them all, and there are a lot that are broken and do not save or load all the way. How can I copy all the photos to keep a backup so I can delete them off the iPad and not lose all the photos? I have also tried plugging the iPad into my PC and tried to mass copy them over as well and it gets through a bunch of them, and then I get errors telling me that the path is no longer valid. At that point I have to unplug and plug it back in for it to work again and when I do, the folders all have an iCloud folder with different numbers then they had before. If I try again, it will get through a bunch and then it will give me the same error again. I don’t want to use iTunes to back it up because iTunes only wants to use the main drive on my PC for the backup of the iPad which I don’t want to save there because it is a SSD that is smaller than my storage drive on my PC that I use to store everything or even an external drive because I don’t want to use up all my SSD space. Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you have a PC, perhaps this easiest, quickest and most robust method is to download and install iCloud for Windows from the Apple website.

Once installed, your iCloud storage is visible from Windows Explorer. From here you can simply cut/paste or drag/drop between your iPad and our PC filesystem. You will, of course, need to use your iCloud Photos storage - but as you intend to archive a large proportion of your photos (and ultimately delete from your iPad/iCloud storage), it won’t have any long term impact on your overall iCloud storage.

I hope this potential solution is helpful to you.
