Turn off Key Repeat
When I turn off key repeat in System Preferences, it doesn't work. I need character accents and this seemed to be the easiest way. Anyone have answers?

You should have character accents popup menus by default when you press and hold. Have you never had this?
A possible fix is to open Terminal and type
defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true
and then restart.
