Bootcamp/Win 10 corruption - Macbook Pro 2015 is crashing

Here is my scenario:

  • I've had a Macbook Pro Retina 2015 for a while.
  • I recently upgraded to Catalina
  • I decided to give bootcamp a try after wanting to do this for a long time!
  • So i go through the procedure with a few hickups. I partitioned my exisiting 1 TB SSD to 500/500.
  • I installed Win 10 on one 500 GB partition.
  • Everything seemed fine. I could switch between MacOSX and Win 10 without issues (by holding Option Key).
  • A few days ago I decided to try to install a Printer connected via USB Cable to my Mac. I was having issues so I decided to boot into Win 10 to see if it worked. Win 10 could not see the Printer so I decided to boot back into MacOSX. I think i may have performed a hard shutdown to force a reboot. So by holding Option key I decided to go to MacOSX.
  • So somehow I believe the win side of things got corrupted. I noticed while on the MacOSX side, after a bit, my mouse would show the spinning beach ball. Then y MacOSX would freeze, and then eventually MacOSX would reboot, and I would get a blue screen of death:
  • So I have to hold down the power button to reboot. If I do nothing I get booted right into the blue screen of death.
  • So I have to always hold down the Option key to boot into MacOSX. When in MacOSX I have less than 5 mintues before the spinning ball shows up - then system locks - then crash - then blue screen.
  • If I hit F1 in Recovery Enviro - nothing happens - if I hit F8 the screen just blinks on/off.
  • So I figured I would at least try to fix this using Bootcamp Assistant - maybe try to remove my installation of Win 10.
  • When I launched Bootcamp it only gave me the option to create a new Win Bootdisk. There was nothing in options to remove an existing Win installation.
  • So I figured I would use Disk Utility and just remove the Win10 Partition. I thought that would fix my woes. Ha - no go. My Mac still thinks there is a Win Partition, I still get booted into Blue Screen of Death on reboot.
  • QUESTION: How does this happen - if there is no WIn 10 why does it still think there is one?????
  • So here is my dilemma: I called Apple support. They said no problem we will go through the process of using web install of Catalina while erasing your HD (so a fresh install). So I hold down Option/CMD/R. I get to the Password screen - input my password - spinning ball - nothing - try again and the password input shakes to say wrong password. So Apple support says to select Forgot PW. It then asks for my apple ID and PW - that works - asks for two form identification from my iPhone - then gives me a message that my apple ID does not allow for erase of my Macbook! So Apple support says okay then hold cmd/R and try that. I'm like what the heck is the difference. Well same thing thing happened - I can not erase my Mac and reinstall Catalina.
  • So I figure I'll create an external MACOSX boot disk (USB) by downloading full install from internet. Well i can never get passed the spinning ball/freeze/crash/bluescreen of death.
  • So Apple says - go to an authorized Apple dealer since Apple stores are closed. i'm like is this going to cost me money - they say of course. It turns out I got quoted for $125 to force a erase and reinstall of Catalina.
  • Questions: How did this happen? Why is it so hard to recover from this blue screen of death? Is it too late to fix this issue - or at least allow for my Mac to not shutdown?
  • I'm disappointed with MacOSX/Bootcamp. Something like this should NEVER happen, and if it did there should be a recovery mode.
  • I look towards your expert knowledge - PLEASE HELP!
  • Thanks

Assuming your 2015 MBP is still in Target Disk Mode, from your 2012 Mini, can you post the output of

diskutil list

What is the macOS version of the Mini? I assume macOS Catalina is the version on the MBP that you tried to install. On the mini, versions older than Mojave may have problems correctly formatting the disk.

Can you run SMC and NVRAM Reset and retry Command+R?

It would seem maybe Apple would allow for a cleanup process after a Bootcamp/Win corruption????? I mean I literally deleted the Win partition - why does my Mac still think there is a Win install - why do i get blue screen, and why is my Mac crashing on the OSX side because of this Bootcamp issue?

You have files in the Mac's EFI partition, which DU cannot cleanup, but BCA does.

Is there any other way to repair OSX or perform an erase/reinstall of Catalina?

Do you have a second Mac?

As for Time Machine - I did setup a session, and i believe I backed everything up, but then stopped. I tried to recover from the previous TM backup, but doesn't TM just allow for single file recovery???? I mean can I just say - give me the entire HD from a month back? Would that have solved this issue?

See Restore your Mac from a backup - Apple Support for reference on the various Restore options.

I have already tried installing via: USB Catalina Recover Drive, Option+CMD+R and CMD+R. During OS install the SSD (even after being formatted as APFS) does not show.

Comparing my internal Mini HD structure versus the external SSD MBP structure:

  • Mini has two "Containers" - one with just drive name the other with drive name - Data.
  • The Mini "Data" drive has the following partitions

1: APFS Volume OpusIII - Data 95.4 GB disk1s1

2: APFS Volume Preboot 81.0 MB disk1s2

3: APFS Volume Recovery 528.5 MB disk1s3

4: APFS Volume VM 5.4 GB disk1s4

5: APFS Volume OpusIII 1 1.0 GB disk1s5

  • MBP SSD only has one drive name/container - no Data Container.
  • Mini Drive name has a "mount point" = /; the Data container has a "mount point" = /System/Volume/Data
  • The MBP has a "mount point" = /Volumes/Opusii

I'm confused how MacOS creates volumes. I suppose APFS creates containers instead of partitions. Maybe due to the ease to create additional containers without destroying existing containers as opposed to partitioning???? So when I perform a Erase using Disk Utility using APFS why can't cmd+R see this HD as a candidate for installing the OS on it? I can mount it using target disk mode. I can even see it during initial CMD+R using Disk Utility - but when I attempt to format it fails - then the SDD disappears. What's with the mount point discrepancies? I deduce that / would be where OS is installed and boots from, and the Data container where you store apps/data?

I know a few things:

  • I have effectively removed the blue screen of death
  • when my MBP boots I see a flashing folder with a question mark - I assume this means - where is my OS?
  • Any method tried to install Catalina fails. The SSD is invisible.
  • The only way to see SSD is using Target Disk Mode.
  • Using Disk Utility to erase and prepare for OS install is a failure.

You should not use Disk Utility to remove BC/Windows partitions, because DU does not know how to clean up Windows.

Before installing Windows on your Mac, a Time Machine backup of macOS is very highly recommended, to avoid the situation that you are currently in.

Can you boot into Local Recovery using Command+R?

Either Option/CMD/R or CMD/R does not work.

Well this has gone from worse to worser.

Yes I have a Mac Mini. I found Target Disk Mode and decided to attach Mac Mini to MacBook Pro (2015). I copied important files from MBP to Mac Mini. So I figured heck I'll use Disk Utility to completely erase my MBP and then install Catalina fresh. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH fail.

So initially it said that the MDP had to have been formatted using GRIB partition (or whatever the requirement is). So I decide to do a CMD+R and the recovery menu came up. So I figured heck I'll install macOS Catalina. It failed couldn't find the MBP HD. So I decide to use Disk Utility to format MBP. I used Mac OS Extended (journaled) (or whatever), and tried again. My MBP HD does not show up!!!!!!!!!!! I even tried using Restore from Time Machine Backup hoping this would help (I did a TM backup in April) - couldn't find MBP HD. So I figured I would create a Restore USB Thumdrive. Went through the whole procedure. Booted from USB. Tried Disk Utility - No MBP HD!!!!!

Loner T thanks fro trying to help me. Here are my thoughts:

  • I'm starting for the first time in 33 years to really hate Macvbook Pro, or is it macOS, or is it Bootcamp. I've always hated Windows so to think that Windows took my Mac done is a fitting and painful thought.
  • This should be easy for Mac. It's been a nightmare. Come on - I tried BCA - fail, tried option+cmd+r, and cmd+r - failed, Tried target disk - format - failed. Tried repair USB drive - failed.
  • If I let my MBP perform a boot up without holding option key I get the blue screen of death. WHERE THE **** IS THIS COMING FROM!!!!!! I deleted portion, I formatted HD, now HD is missing, and yet blue screen of death still haunts me!

Loner T:

  • Please help me! what more can I do? How the **** is Windows or blue screen of death still haunting me. How do I completely erase my MBP HD, and reinstall Catalina???? What more can I do? Apple Genius Bars are not open in PA (not yet), and a local Apple Service Center would charge me minimum $200. I have no confidence they are going to solve my problem since I've tried everything. Does Apple have better tools then what's available to the general public? Do I have to throw away my $1,400 MBP due to fracking bootcamp screwup??

Please help me!!!!!!

So I did SMC and NVRAM as you requested. So when I try to reboot the Blue Screen of Death does not show. Though I get a Folder with a question mark. It blinks on and off. So clearly MBP cannot find an OS to startup with. Okay now I want to install Catalina! HOW DO I DO THIS?

Loner T I do not know if you are Apple employee, or just someone who likes to help. Id there anyway I can get this elevated upward to Apple????

Jun 6, 2020 3:38 PM in response to Loner T

After doing SMC and NRAM, and holding CMD-R I still don't see SSD. And if I try to instal macOS it choose OS X Mavericks??????

When I select Disk Utility I do see SSD. I didn't chose to erase, but instead try to at least install Mavericks. No HD to install. Go back to Disk Utility and the internal SSD disappears!!!!!!!!!! WTHECK.

Jun 6, 2020 7:11 PM in response to Loner T

I have to see if I can still do target from mini to mbp

the mini was upgraded to Catalina before connecting to mbp

also I performed diagnostics while on apple support call (before trying to format MBP he)

ive seen a number of issues with sad hd not being seen online. One person said they solved the problem by naming the had. Crazy stuff.

Jun 7, 2020 12:17 PM in response to Loner T

I tried again using cmd+R. It initially see the SSD HD. When I try to erase it spins a bit then fails to erase. The SSD HD then disappears from HD list.

I then connected MBP to Mini using Target Mode. The SSD HD shows up. When I get info on Untitled it says this:

I then ran the terminal command you requested and got this:

So I can use SSD HD as a Target - it is sometimes shown in CMD+R but cannot be formatted giving me an error. How do I recover from this Loner T? It would seems easy - open Disk Utility - select SSD and format. Then boot up using my Repair Catalina USB, and install Catalina. What is preventing me from doing this easy task?

Thanks

So I'm impatient. I launched Disk Utility on Mini. The SSD showed up. I chose Erase and selected APFS, made sure GUID_Partition scheme was selected, and named it OpusII. Here is the result:

I guess I'm confused how Apple formats HD.s What is "Container disk?"? Also Why is there OpusII and OpusIII Data for the Mini. I believe this is how my previous incaranation of the MBP SSD was set up as well.

I'll wait for your response to my previous posts, but I'm also going to try one more time performing USB Catalina install.
