Desktop files and folders dissappeared overnight even from time machine - Catalina 10.15.5

There is no need to reboot; if the files are hidden, rebooting will not fix it anyway.

You may use a similar command in Terminal to recursively unhide the files inside Desktop and Documents.

chflags -R nohidden ~/Desktop

chflags -R nohidden ~/Documents

Is it possible that the folders are there, but have become hidden?

Try this - open Terminal and paste the following line exactly:

ls -lda ~/Desktop

What do you get as the output? Do you get an error? Or do you get something like this:

drwx---r-x@ 35 lsequeir  staff  1120 Jun  3 16:56 /Users/lsequeir/Desktop

Hi Luis, my problem still exist after paste the 2 lines below,

chflags -R nohidden ~/Desktop

chflags -R nohidden ~/Documents

I follow the the first step (ls -lda ~/Desktop) and getting this info below;

drwx------@ 10 Hudson  staff  320 Jun  6 15:54 /Users/Hudson/Desktop

Does this meant my files still exist??

Your situation may be different from the OP.

In his case, the files were all there in the original place, but hidden.

Did you try pressing command-shift-period in the Finder? This toggles an option for the Finder to show hidden files.

Also, did you check if Documents and Desktop are in your iCloud Drive?

Open a Finder window, click iCloud Drive on the sidebar, and see if there are Documents folder and Desktop folder in there. If there are and your files are there, let us know. Do not turn this setting off before copying these files somewhere else first for backup.

I tried command-shift-period, but there's nothing. I did not upgrade icloud and it was full for a year, those new files/folders created after that was not save in icloud drive.

My problem was out sudden all dekstop folders and files just disappeared. I had search around for solutions but unfortunately couldn't find any solutions yet.

You say you did not use iCloud, but... go make sure!

Click iCloud Drive in the sidebar.

Odds are you will see Documents, and Desktop in there, with all your stuff.

How far back does your Time Machine go?

Are the folders there, but empty, or are they missing completely?

This is good!

It tells you that the Desktop folder EXISTS!

Now maybe this will fix it - in Terminal, paste the following two lines:

chflags nohidden ~/Desktop

chflags nohidden ~/Documents

Do you see anything resembling your missing files in the output of each of the following in Terminal?

ls ~/Desktop

ls ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents

Finally i found all my files in icloud archive. Anyway, thank you so much for the assistance!!
