Managing my child’s contacts in screen time

I’ve tried to use the option in “communication limits” to manage my child’s contacts and I can’t seem to figure it out.

This is what I’ve tried so far:

1) Turned “manage [childs name] contacts” on and then accepted on my child’s device.

2) I further tried to use the option to add a contact on my kids device.

3) Attempted to refresh contacts on my child’s device.

4) Restarted both mine and my child’s device.

5) The last thing I tried which might give a clue to the problem - I tried to turn off iCloud for contacts on my child’s device (in order to turn it back on as a restart) and it would not allow me to turn off (other apps like calendar, messages, etc did allow me to toggle on and off. Only contacts would not allow me).

Nothing worked. Right now all I can see on my phone is the one contact I attempted to add remotely (I should note that all other screen time functions are working properly).

I’d appreciate help on figuring this out.

Thanks!

Hello YDS5555,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are having an issue managing contacts for your child in Screen Time. You seem to have done most of the steps in the process, but I would recommend reviewing the following support article to review the setup for Screen Time.

Set up Screen Time for a family member on iPad - Apple Support

Specifically this section:

  • "Manage a child’s contacts: If you’re using Family Sharing, you can manage your child’s contacts. Tap Manage [child’s name] Contacts.
  • If your child already has contacts in iCloud, they receive a notification on their device asking them to approve the request to manage them. If they don’t have contacts, they don’t get a notification and you can immediately add contacts.
    • When you manage your child’s contacts, a new row appears beneath Manage [child’s name] Contacts to show how many contacts they have. You can view and edit those contacts by tapping that row.
  • Allow contact editing: Tap Allow Contact Editing to turn off this option and prevent your child from editing their contacts.
    • Turning off contact editing and limiting communication at any time to Contacts Only is a good way to control who your child can communicate with and when they can be contacted."

Best regards.

Thank you for your response i_rina!

I already performed the instructions you cited.

I did approve the request to manage on my child’s phone and a new row supposedly showing my child’s contacts does appear.

Though the list of contacts is empty (I see none of my child’s 50+ contacts) and the contact that I added from my phone (in the “add a contact” row) does not appear on my child’s phone.

Thanks again!
