AppleCare Protection Plan can be purchased within 1 year of your Mac purchase where available. This is on the Apple website but when I called Apple they said this doesn't exist. Does anyone know anything about this?

The key words in your post are "where available." In the U.S. and other places where AppleCare+ is available (note the "+" which is different than the previously available AppleCare), you must buy it withing 60 days, not 1 year. See: AppleCare Products - Mac - Apple
