What AC Adapter for Dome Airport Extreme? Need answer ASAP for eBay ratings..

Hi, I just got my 2003 Airport Extreme in the mail, for $4.50, like new condition. Doesn’t have a power cord, so what AC adapter can I use for powering it up? Thanks! Photos below.

Based on the image, it looks like you have the UL2043 model. This model is powered via PoE, not by an adapter. That would mean that you would either need to get a PoE injector or connect this base station to a PoE-enabled router or Ethernet switch.

It appears yours is missing the DC power socket.. you can see the diagram you picked up and the actual photo are different. If so it is definitely POE. You need to buy a POE standard injector.. plenty on eBay and not expensive. You simply run main ethernet through the injector which will supply 48v to the Airport.

If it does have a power socket this model from memory used a fairly unusual socket and a 5v supply NOT 12V so don't plug in anything until you confirm it.

Well, I was close when I originally said that it looked like you had the 1034 version. 1033 appears to be a different version / model that was sold only in Canada. 1034 was sold in the U.S. and came with a standard 12 volt power supply.

1033 used a different power adapter than 1034. I still can't figure out how the seller knew the AirPort was working if there was no power adapter.

Life would be tons easier if you return the 1033 and get a 1034 with a power supply included. I saw several in the $10-20 range on Ebay.

You have a Model A1034

Honestly, it will be a miracle if you can get this to work. The AirPort requires special software that Apple has not offered for over 10 years and even if you can find the software somewhere (it came on a CD), it will not run on any Mac that has been offered in the last 10 years.

Did not mean to mark as solved. It is not solved, sorry.

Funny because my Mac is actually an iBook G3 Snow from 2001, which is why I purchased the “dome” AirPort. I made sure and it said it was working. Every AC adapter I plug into the dome is very.. snug? Doesn’t it need 12V?

I did find the setup manual, link below

It is always possible to power a device.. you need to open it up and solder a wire directly to the back of the socket or wherever suitable on the board. Doing these jobs I have simply replaced the existing socket with a standard 2.1mm or 2.5mm one. I have also drilled holes through the case and put in a multiple DC to 5v adapter.. so instead of needing 5v you can use any supply from 9-24v .. I really don't understand why this is not more common. Power supplies now are a tiny chip an inductor and a few capacitors.

If you want to do it properly check the plug packs etc you have around the house.. most people have a stack of them. I can remember having issues finding a suitable one but you never know.. the plug pack must not be plugged in unless it happens to be 5v.. you are only looking for a suitable plug remember. Then go to electronics store and ask the for a power supply 5v 2a with a matching plug. That will cost you $20 or so.. Make sure they use a pair of callipers to measure the plug. I use a mm drill bit set as gauge for the pin hole. You might need to pack the hole with foil to get decent contact if the sizes are not exact.

Having done all that.. you are still no closer to the ancient software you need.. and then using G wireless in this century?? Why? They were hugely expensive and great units in their day.. but that day is long past.

OR

Open the trash lid.. gently insert.. close the trash lid and walk away.

The adapter from Amazon is a converter....... 110/220 to 12 volts.

Does the iBook have AirPort Utility installed? It might have been called something like AirPort Admin Utility back in the day.

Not sure how the seller knew it was working if it did not have an AC adapter.

Hello all. Sorry, notifications or something were off on this. I went on eBay (I have a gift card..), and I bought a PoE injector for $3. Thank you for clarifying this. I appreciate your help. I would probably have been lost and would’ve gotten frustrated with the router.. Can’t wait to start using it with my iBook G3! Yay.

Oh also... it does say a1034 on the router... Will it still work with the Power over ethernet injector?

There is not a lot of info available for these anymore (consider obsolete by apple so all info if wiped off site).

You could try eBay for an original power cord, but your second best bet might be an universal ac adapter.

No, only the model with POE will work with POE..

The voltage and current you need is written on the base. 5v 2.4A .. the easiest way is to buy another old Airport but this time get one with the power supply.. they should only cost a few dollars.

As noted in the previous post the DC plug is non standard size.. and I think you might have issues with generic replacement.

but at the price of $4, I couldn’t resist

At this point, it looks like you are out $7. You can throw good money out after bad looking for a power supply that will cost a few more dollars and then figure out the cost of your time to open up the AirPort and solder some connections. Still no guarantee that it will work, even though the seller will say things like......."it was working fine"......(sure, when it was working).

Might be your idea of fun, but not mine.

For $15-20, you can find an A1034 with the power adapter on Ebay. It's your call.
