My iPhone sync failure

For the last few days my iPhone has not been syncing emails. Emails that have been read or deleted from my iMac are still showing as unread on my iPhone (and on my iPad). Advice on this forum to sign out of iCloud on all devices and back in has made no difference. Yesterday, after backing up my iPhone on my iMac, I reset it and restored it from the iMac. It made no difference. If I delete an email on my iPhone it's deleted on the iMac, so the syncing works one way. Does any one have a solution?

Thanks for responding, zinacef. One thing I forgot to include in my original message is the following. In my email window on the iMac, in the panel on the left hand side at the very bottom are the words "Moving Messages" and under this heading is "1 of 150". Is this a helpful clue? When I delete an email the number increases by one. I only noticed this recently, so why did this counting of deleted emails start?
