GMail not marked read on computer after reading on iphone

Ever since downloading the new IOS 16 on my iphone 14 pro I have been having email problems.

I use the apple mail app to sync and access all my email accounts (multiple gmail).

I can access my gmail account emails on the apple mail but after reading them I noticed that when I log into my one of my gmail accounts on my computer the emails that I previously read on my iphone with new IOS 16 are not marked as read but rather as unread. There is a synching issue between gmail and apple after this new IOS 16 release that is not sending the notification to the gmail servers that the emails have been read on iphone. Anyone have a solution for this?

Hi BenEvest,

To clarify, is the sync broken both ways? For example, if you go to the web server and read one or more emails, then refresh the Mail app on your iPhone, are they then marked as read?

Additionally, if you haven't already, toggle Mail off and back on under Settings > Mail > Accounts > [your gmail account name]. This forces a resync with the Gmail server.

If the issue continues beyond that, remove the account from your iPhone entirely and add it back.

"Log out of or remove email accounts

  1. Go to Settings  > Mail > Accounts.
  2. Tap the email account you want to remove, then do one of the following:
    • If you’re removing an iCloud email account: Tap iCloud, tap iCloud Mail, then turn off “Use on this iPhone.”
  • If you’re removing another email account: Turn off Mail.
    • Note: To remove the email account from all apps on your iPhone, tap Delete Account.

Add email accounts

The first time you open the Mail app on your iPhone, you may be asked to set up an email account—just follow the onscreen instructions.

To add additional email accounts, do the following:

  1. Go to Settings  > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Tap an email service—for example, iCloud or Microsoft Exchange—then enter your email account information.
    • Tap Other, tap Add Mail Account, then enter your email account information."

Cheers!

Thanks to everyone who took time to reply and especially to DerekM87. His suggestions worked for me. I tried toggling on and off which didn't help. I then deleted my gmail account on my iphone. It mail not have been necessary but I cleaned out my Safari cache and switched my phone off and back on again. They I added the email back. On my iphone, I clicked on each category of my email account - inbox, sent, drafts, etc including ones that I had added. It added back each one along with my gmail calendar that I use. I'm back in business after several days of frustration. I had also checked to be sure I had the latest apple update which was 16.5.1 at the time but that itself didn't solve it.

If this previously didn't work for you, you might want to try once again or please post for others if you found something that did.

When I read gmail on my laptop, the email is marked as read on my iphone, but when I read on my iphone, the email is not marked as read. Leading to same issue of having to delete many emails I'd already read. I just deleted my gmail account from my iphone and added it back, but that did not work (e.g., I opened an email on my phone, read it, but it was showing as unread via the gmail browswer on my laptop). I installed the gmail/google app on my iphone, and that seemed to do the trick. I prefer not to learn how to use yet another app, but I guess it's better than deleting extra emails everyday.

I should have clarified that I had 2 gmail accounts on my iphone and the problem was only with 1 of them. Also, changes made on my computer showed up on my iphone but changes made on my iphone such as "read" and deletions didn't relect back on the gmail on my computer (Windows 10). The fix above solved that.

I should also clarify that after I went thru the above steps of deleting and adding back my gmail account to my iphone, it loaded the current state of my gmail account onto my iphone. Meaning that messages previously deleted on my iphone since this started, showed up again but now when I delete them or read them on the iphone, the change is reflected on my computer gmail. Hope that helps.

I had this problem too... And up until this problem started happening a little bit ago I've realized that people also have not been getting my emails that I've sent from my iPhone 14, even though they all appear to have sent. Tried it on my computer, and they were able to confirm they received it that time. Also, when I deleted the account off my phone and then added it back, I had apparently 70 (I get a lot of emails) unread and somehow back in my inbox after having already viewed them, replied to some of them (which appeared to have sent but didn't), and filed them the way I wanted them, all over again. But I believe after doing that, we're back to normal. Thank goodness somebody already had this question answered or I could have been looking at a much bigger problem!

I seem to have fixed my issue. I tried all of the suggestions here but nothing worked.

So, I went into gmail on Safari, on a computer, went to settings and turns out the POP transfer was turned off there, not on the iPhone. I also do not know how it got turned off since I don't go around changing my gmail settings but maybe it will help some of you to check this.

mail.google.com then the settings button on the top right -> advanced settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

Good luck.

I HOPE someone sees these posts and fixes our issue! Mine is the same - one gmail account works fine with my iPhone syncing with my computer and the other account does not sync at all. So every night I'm deleting tons of messages that I already read and deleted on my phone.

Tonight I got the idea to forward my messages from my gmail account that is not syncing to the account that is syncing. IT WORKED! So now at least when I do things on my iPhone it syncs to my computer and it's less work. If you can't forward to your work gmail - maybe try setting up a new gmail account and forward the account that's not syncing to a new account to see if that works.
