Chrome / Gmail freezes system when downloading files

I use a new iMac. When I download a file via Chrome - from a website, or Gmail -, the download is successful, however, the whole system is freezing, unresponsive. Nothing works, only the Power button "shutdown". I searched the internet, as I see it is not a unique issue... Please advise what to do. Thanks

can't add attachment using mail tab Within the last week, whenever I try to send an attachment using the mail tab on my macbook air, my computer freezes and I have to force quit the program. Mac Book Air freezes when attaching any files Every time I try to upload a file to a website, access a file in MS Office, or attach a file in an email my Mac Book Air freezes. The window pops up to upload or attach the file but it will not allow me to select a file or cancel the action. The window does not have the red, yellow, and green button to close, minimize or enlarge the window. This just started on Sunday March 28, 2021.
