I have Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable and I tried cmd + F2 but it's not working. Do I need different cable or my MacBook Pro doesn't have function for second monitor?

Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier on the iMac used as the external display. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later.
It also requires exactly the correct iMac, matched with exactly the correct cable, as noted in this article:

Thank you. I still can't figure out which cable/adapter I should be using. I got couple of different cables but none of them are working. I am trying to look for adapter to connect thunderbolt 2(MacBook Pro) to Mini DisplayPort (iMac). Would you know how to do this or is there an adapter I should be using?

Thank you. I didn’t realise about macOS Mojave. My MacBook Pro has Mojave. I will figure out if I can downgrade to High Sierra and try this again.
Please read more carefully. High Sierra or older is only a requirement for the iMac, not for the other computer.
You may run whatever MacOS you please on your MacBook Pro.
