Mid 2010 MacBook Pro battery issue

I've installed a new battery. All was well for a while. Now it will charge to 100% and remain there while connected to the charger. If I disconnect from charger..the battery begins to drain but when I reconnect it won't charge. Often a reboot will fix this. I've done the SMC reset.

Thanks

SMC reset is supposed to make it all OK again.

No penalty for doing SMC reset multiple times.

How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

Be sure to follow the procedure very deliberately. In particular, the keys called out are by LOCATION, not key-name. The keys with the Same names on the other side of the keyboard are not wired-in and will not do the job.

Taken from the following Apple Support article:

My battery isn't charging

Confirm the correct wattage AC adapter for your computer. A power adapter rated for a lower wattage than is required for the system might not reliably charge the computer. If you're not sure which power adapter to use with your computer, learn how to find the right power adapter and cord for your Mac notebook.

The following may be possible:

  • The replacement battery is the wrong type.
  • The replacement battery is faulty.
  • You are using an incorrect AC adapter to charge the battery.

The OP indicated a 2010 Macbook Pro, and the new Battery Health Management feature works only on 2016 Macbook Pros or later (Macbook Pros that have Thunderbolt 3 ports). The OP's laptop has USB 2 and firewire. I'm concerned that there is a different issue with the OP's new battery, or some incompatibility between the power adaptor and the battery. I'd be interested in knowing what the brands and part numbers are for both of those.

I have three Apple laptops here which were manufactured in 2010, 2018, and 2019. All three have original Apple batteries and all three show "SMP" as the manufacturer when checked under About This Mac, Power. That "Power" section will also provide you with a quick assessment of your battery condition. How many cycles does yours show, and what if the capacity that it shows. If yours is not an Apple battery then it is a third party battery and might or might not interact the same way with the Mac OS and SMC which controls the charging behavior based on voltages and currents and the info that it gets from the battery.

Could it be related to the Catalina 10.15.5 update?

See https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT211094

About 1/3 down the page it says:

"How battery health management helps

The battery health management feature in macOS 10.15.5 is designed to improve your battery's lifespan by reducing the rate at which it chemically ages. The feature does this by monitoring your battery's temperature history and its charging patterns.

Based on the measurements that it collects, battery health management may reduce your battery's maximum charge when in this mode. This happens as needed to ensure that your battery charges to a level that's optimized for your usage—reducing wear on the battery, and slowing its chemical aging.

While battery health management benefits your battery's long-term lifespan, it can also reduce the amount of time your Mac runs on one battery charge when capacity limits are applied. If your priority is making your Mac notebook last as long as possible before recharging, you can turn the feature off.

When battery health management is turned on, your battery's maximum charging capacity might be limited. Although the feature is designed to improve your battery's lifespan, the limited maximum capacity might update your battery status menu to indicate a need for service."

Normal operation (except in 10.15.5 ThunderBolt-3 Macs) is for your Mac to allow the battery to decline to about 92 percent before initialing a new charge cycle, then topping off to near 100 percent and stop charging. Your Mac should start charging when declines to about 92 percent.

This is because a charge cycle is ever-so-slightly destructive to battery longevity, and charge cycles should not be initiated when not actually required.

There are three micro-controllers managing battery, power adapter, and your charging in your Mac. This is a job for computers, not humans!

STOP Watching it and get on with your important work!

I can't recall exactly where I got the battery from...online...I'm certain I got the correct one. I'm willing to accept that it might not be the best...I just don't know. I can't recall the cost but I certainly didn't go cheap. It's performed well for months and the computer has been working overtime...I'm teaching all my classes online and have been at the computer constantly. The issue just seemed start up. The old barrel shaped plug in shows green but the battery is actually draining and not charging. Then a restart ...wait a while...nothing seems to be consistent...then suddenly the light turns orange and its charging again and seems to work fine. I'm certain the charger is a fully functioning, Apple original charger.

Still stumped but appreciate your help

The watching isn't the problem...mine goes below 92%....mine goes all the way to zero. the charger is showing a green light the whole way...never switches back to charging unless I shut things down and let it sit for a while. (If it reaches 100% and I leave it plugged in it seems to stay there...but If I unplug it ...it begins to drain...plugging it back in won't get it to charge ...no matter how low the battery reads...until I've shut down)
