iCloud asking iPhone passcode on mac

Hey....

I changed the password on my macbook pro and then had iCloud asking for passwords.

It says: "Enter the passcode you use to unlock iPhone "MY NAME" . This passcode protects your Apple ID, saved passwords, and other data stored in iCloud. Your passcode is encrypted and cannot be read by Apple."

Is this a normal / legit request? I can't remember doing it before?

You had synced an iPhone and Mac by signing in with same Apple ID and password on the same network and had created a passcode on the iPhone https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/set-a-passcode-iph14a867ae/ios

https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204060

So enter the passcode on Mac if it is in your records , and you changed the Apple ID and password from Mac https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201355

So the next step after changing Apple ID and password will be in this article https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204071

As asked in your question - Is this a normal / legit request? - yes it's quite normal and legit .
