Carrier support for IPhone 8 A1863

just got off the phone with Apple support. Rep told me that iPhones (in the US) can be built so they don’t work with a particular carrier. A1905 are AT&T / T mobile only.

This phone is MQ6K2LL/A aka A1863 CDMA and GSM compatible. Checked About Phone and inside the SIM card slot.

Both Tello and Sprint have confirmed that this phone CANNOT be activated on Sprint networks.

What am I missing here? Can the original build block certain bands in the phone so they don’t work? Is the CDMA function broken?

The phone is confirmed unlocked from Cricket where it was working fine as a GSM system phone AT&T.

I can’t believe Apple would make a CDMA phone that Sprint doesn’t recognize.

Any thoughts?

Carrier response:

Thank you for choosing

Please note the IMEI is not compatible with our network, because the activation policy your phone has and it only will work on the GSM network, not on CDMA.

We kindly as you to contact Apple and check with a specialist about the activation policy for the CDMA compatibility on your device.

We appreciate your time.

Sincerely,

Your Team

To be really clear, Sprint won’t support the phone. It isn’t anything that Apple can fix. they are trying to cover for their business policy. Verizon will say they won’t, either, but at least with Verizon you can escalate to a tier 2 tech who can add the phone’s MEID to their database. You can try that with Sprint, but they can be pretty stubborn.

Sprint has historically been very stubborn about not supporting devices you did not buy from Sprint itself. As silly as it may sound, that’s been their policy for decades, and there is nothing illegal about it.

Prior to LTE networks, the other carriers were also often very stubborn about forcing people to buy their devices from the carrier whose network they wanted to use.

Thank you, Lawrence Finch. Do you understand why Sprint won't support the phone?

Is that the business policy that Sprint is trying to cover? At least two Sprint reps were adamant that the multimode phone was GSM only and there was *NOTHING* they could do. Neither would explain why.

Apple reps were kind and persistent and got Sprint on the phone. Same deal.

Interestingly, the Verizon BYOD checker cleared the phone on Saturday and then refused the phone on Sunday. Guess it's all who you "talk" to!

Well, the Sprint brand is the one disappearing, not T-Mobile. Supposedly by the fall there will be no more “Sprint” stores, just T-Mobile stores. I’d hope that indicates they are trying to wipe out the Sprint brand of customer (non)service.

Of course it sucks for anyone who recently bought a Sprint 5G phone, as almost none of those will work on the T-Mobile’s (or the ultimate merged) 5G network.
