Receiving iMessages on my new iPad

I recently bought an iPad 7th Gen to replace my iPad2. It was fine at first, but now I am not receiving any messages on the new iPad. I tried sending one to myself from my iPhone and that came through but I am not receiving any from my family, friends, etc. How do I correct this? It is set up to send and receive from my iPhone number and my email address.
