My iMac DVD Player version 5.8 will play some DVD's, but others are not even recognized and get ejected after a minute or two. (My OS cannot be upgraded beyond High Sierra Version 10.13.6.)

The drive may need cleaned. You can find cd/dvd cleaning disks at most office supply stores, Amazon, etc. It's also possible the DVDs in question are damaged.

Your DVD player will not recognize any Blu-ray media, and may also reject certain other DVD based on how it was encoded. Try the free VLC media player on the same rejected DVD and see if it will correctly play it. If VLC cannot play it, then it may be a region encoding issue, or a damaged disk.
VLC may have a problem playing a DVD that is ejected.
