I didn't use my ear phones for 8 months after I bought my iphone 7. I tried them the other day and discovered they don't work. I tried them without the phone case, checked bluetooth etc. Am I not doing something I should be doing?

I found the solution myself (idiot that I am!)- I went to Settings - Music -Playback and chose EQ, and realised it was 'OFF'. So I put it on to Vocal Booster and the earphones were working!
