Damaged iMac Screen

Hi,

I have a 2019 iMac 27” 5k Retina Display and I absolutely devastated to have had the screen damaged. Most of the damage is confined to the besel of the screen but there is a crack coming down into the screen. Looking at internal pictures I’ve been lucky that there doesn’t seem to be anything behind where it’s been damaged.

With everything going on having it repaired is very unlikely at the moment so my question is is it safe to continue using? how is the screen function, is there liquid inside? Do I need to worry about causing further damage or suffering ‘bleeding’ if I continue to use it?

anyone got a rough idea how much one of these costs for Apple to fix?

ive attached photos below, at the moment the screen is working fine and there is only a very faint bleed at the besil when the screen is black.

any advice or experience with this is appreciated thank you.

I am also OK with continuing to use it. I had a 2010 iMac 27 and my daughter knocked a heavy object off the shelf above and cracked the upper right corner of the glass. The crack never grew and the computer lasted until late 2018 when it died of other causes.

If you have AppleCare+ put Apple on notice of a claim now. That will help if your AC+ expires soon and greatly reduce the financial pain. Apple looks to be working to help people with issues during the pandemic. I highly recommend calling them to see what options they have, I know smaller devices can get mail-in/ship-in service but the iMac may be too big. Call anyway--don't assume what they will or won't do.

As we are not Apple we can't give you pricing unless someone happens by who had a similar problem. However, without AppleCare+, you are looking at a very big expense. The glass and display are one unit and your cannot replace just the the glass as in older iMacs. Looking at some the repair sites, the displays are hard to find as a part and I cannot find a listing of anything newer than 2015. Those 2015 dispalys, used, are about US$400 from one site and that site is out of them.
