Am I being monitored by my parents?

I think my mom is spying on my phone remotely. I don't hide my phone from her and I always give it her when she needs it unless I’m busy doing work or playing games or something. Even after granting her access to use it physically. I have nothing to hide but it’s an invasion of privacy and its sort of upsetting. How do I know for sure she is monitoring my phone remotely? I am 17 year old and yet I still give her my phone without hesitating.

Are you sharing an Apple. ID with her? If yes, she can monitor you but you can also monitor her. Has she jailbroken your iPhone? Do a search for the word Cydia on your iPhone. Are you on family sharing? Look up Apple's article on parental control and you can see what she can do.

I suggest you ask your mother. When you are both calm, bring up the subject, Don't get defensive or angry. Ask her what she needs in order to feel comfortable with you having a smart phone. Listen, really listen, to what she says. Talk to her about how and why privacy is important to you.

My guess is that your mother worries about you and what might happen to you rather than worries you'll do something bad (as an only daughter, I know what that's like). If your mother starts to see you as mature, as having learned the things she has taught you about being careful in the world, she may even light up.

Whatever ends up happening, both of you will probably learn something.

Best of luck.
