I get code An unexpected error occurred (error code -36). Is there a fix for this?
Is any new info on how to fix this problem. I external hard drive is mounted but I can not read the files in it or copy new ones in.

That's a disk input/output (I/O) error.
If you cannot read or write to it, then there is probably something wrong with the drive. Try First Aid in Disk Utility.
