Automatic Updates Don't Seem to be Working

I have a brand new iMac 27-inch running Catalina 10.15.5, less than a week old. Automatic updates is configured fully in System Preferences. When I click on Software Update says "Your Mac is up to date - macOS Catalina 10.10.5, Last checked: Today at 6:27 AM" and the box "Automatically keep my Mac up to date" is checked. When I click on Advanced... all the boxes in the ensuing dialog are checked. Yet for the past 3 days the App Store icon in the dock still tells me that I have 3 updates. When I go to the App Store it tells me there are "Upcoming Automatic Updates" for Keynote, Pages, and Numbers. If I click Update All, or click Update on them individually, the little progress circle that appears spins endlessly with no updating.

Questions: Do I have to be patient and one of these days the automatic updates will happen? Shouldn't the updates occur when I click on them to update? Is there something I'm not understanding about how updates, automatic or otherwise, work?
