how do I efficiently approve a new app on my childs device

I have a very hard time approving any app purchase with family sharing. It feels like trial and error? I have a MacBook Pro running Catalina and an iPhone 8. When we try to put an application on my daughters 7th Generation iPod, I don't know which device to try and use to approve- or where to look for the permission request.
